Maximize Your Organic & Natural Foods Budget
When to go organic, and when to save your money

Increasing numbers of mothers-to-be are seeking out organic food during pregnancy. However, the higher price of organic produce and foods can be discouraging.

If you're concerned about the cost or availability of organic produce, consider switching to organics just for the "GO ORGANIC " foods (see our list below). These are foods whose pesticide residue levels have been proven very high in their conventionally-grown form.

In addition to this list, there's good rule of thumb to follow: if you have to peel a thick skin in order to get to the produce, you're fine choosing conventionally-grown over organic.

GO ORGANIC
These foods contain the highest concentrations of pesticides. Go organic with these foods whenever possible, and don't forget to look in the frozen foods aisle if fresh organic is unavailable.

  • Apple
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Cherries
  • Coffee*
  • Grapes (imported)
  • Kale
  • Lettuce
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Strawberries
  • Sweet Bell Peppers

SAFEST NON-ORGANIC FOODS
These foods have consistently shown low concentrations of pesticide residue when conventially grown.

  • Asparagus
  • Avocados
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Eggplant
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi
  • Mangoes
  • Onions
  • Papayas
  • Pineapples
  • Sweet Corn
  • Sweet Peas
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Watermelon

* Coffee is not on the EWG list; we added this item based on the high concentration of pesticide residue on the beans and the fact that many imported beans have been treated with DDT.
